A summary of what life is like for black families in America today
During Black History Month, which has been officially celebrated every February since 1976, we see the achievements of black Americans. This year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History made a family theme for its Black History Month celebration. In honor of the past, we provide a summary of facts about the knowledge of Black families in America today based on a recent study from the Pew Research Center, U.S. Census Bureau, and National Bureau of Economic Research

1) 14% of the U.S. population blacks, from 2019.
By comparison, 60% of U.S. people non-Hispanic White, 18% Hispanic, 7% Asian American, and 2% Native American or Alaska Native. Learn more.
2) 75% of black American adults say religion is very important in their lives.

3) 64% of black Americans say that by July 2020 they were living comfortably or financially well.

4) 42% of black American adults had their own home by 2019.

6) 23% of black Americans 25 years and older had a bachelor's degree or higher by 2019 - up from 12% in 1989.
